With her defiantly untamed eyebrows, riotously colourful clothes, piled-high and flower-strewn braids and heaps of ethnic jewellery, Frida Kahlo’s image is instantly recognisable. Since her death in 1954 at the age of 47, the Mexican artist’s fame has continued to grow, with her legions of fans drawn at least as much to her appearance – and its significance – as to her paintings.
